Artist's Description

Cairns are rocks stacked on top of each other. All over the world, from ancient times until present, from mountains to deserts and coasts, people have built cairns. Sometimes they mark a significant place or tomb, serve as communication, mark a trail, or have a religious purpose. I like to think Cairns allow us to ponder the balance of life.

The inspiration for this series comes from visits to the Lake Superior Northshore in Minnesota where I would come across these wonderful stacks of rocks, created and left behind by other creative rock lovers. I consider many of my new paintings as collaborations with strangers I’ve never met.

About Garry McMichael

Garry McMichael

For three decades Garry McMichael has been traveling the back roads of Middle America, especially the Ozarks and the Mississippi River basin, capturing its beauty with the camera, charcoals, pastels and paint. Garry is constantly searching for those fleeting moments when the landscape, the atmospheric conditions and the ever-changing light come together in a flash of visual inspiration. Whether you are inspired by the ebb and flow of the Mississippi River, a quiet walk through the rugged Ozark mountains, or watching a summer thunderstorm roll across the prairie you will appreciate the art of Garry McMichael.
