It only happens for a few days in early spring. The leaves pop out on all the trees with these bright yellow green colors. The brilliant leaves are the perfect compliment to Elephant Rocks red granite. The landscape was full of energy.
There is nothing quite like this rock-strewn landscape anywhere else in Missouri or Mid-America. Giant boulders of pink granite rocks thrown all over the landscape and hardwood forest. Throughout the centuries green and gray lichens and mosses have only added to their shape, texture and color. Elephant Rocks is one of middle America's strongest energy vortexes.
Garry has taken on the challenge of capturing their beauty throughout the seasons and under unique lighting and weather conditions.
You can find Elephant Rocks State Park about 70 miles south of St. Louis, Missouri near Pilot Knob, Missouri.

For three decades Garry McMichael has been traveling the back roads of Middle America, especially the Ozarks and the Mississippi River basin, capturing its beauty with the camera, charcoals, pastels and paint. Garry is constantly searching for those fleeting moments when the landscape, the atmospheric conditions and the ever-changing light come together in a flash of visual inspiration. Whether you are inspired by the ebb and flow of the Mississippi River, a quiet walk through the rugged Ozark mountains, or watching a summer thunderstorm roll across the prairie you will appreciate the art of Garry McMichael.
