The snaking configuration plus the two trains in tandem, one echoing the other, really make this piece, plus the granulation of the tracks gravel and surrounding barren terrain -- a major part of the picture -- is picked up again in the grain of the film in the sky. The white handlebars of the two engines -- designed for human hands -- help set-off this work nicely, almost as if emphasizing the human touch in an otherwise rough, unfriendly and industrial-type landscape.
